Trade was a controversial topic in the 1800s. Who should the United States be trading with? Old laws stated that America was only allowed to trade with Britain, however when that expired it was open. Madison allied the United States with France, agreeing not to trade with Britain anymore. Most likely, this changed the kind of materials American citizens were receiving. This also caused tensions with Britain which caused citizens to believe that Britain was aiding and encouraging Native Americans to fight against us.
ReplyDeleteThe War of 1812 is known as the "second war of independence." It gave us confidence and showed our strength as an independent country. Whether or not we needed to do that will never truly be known.
When Missouri wanted to become part of the Union there were 11 slave states and 11 free states. This meant that there was an even number of Senate members on either side as well. If Missouri became a part of the Union, this would make an uneven number of slave and free states and thus more senate members on one side than the other. This was why a new state needed to be added, to balance the slave and free states. Originally, Maine was a part of Massachusetts, however it became a free state in 1820 while Missouri was admitted as a slave state in 1821. This maintained balance between the slave and free states.

ReplyDeleteThe United States were effected by the European politics. The English stopped US ships and took men who they though were deserters of the Royal Navy. The English also stopped US trades with the French because they were having a war against France. The White House was also burned down at one point. It was important to defend our waters. Yes the war of 1812 was worth fighting for.

The Missouri compromise balanced the "North-South tug-of-war." Missouri was added as a slave state while Maine became a free state.
